Author Visit: David Shannon in PDX

Headed down to "A Children's Place" bookstore today to catch David Shannon reading "It's Christmas David!"from the latest in his "No, David!" series. Really good presentation and he did a "How To" drawing demo; to which, I dutifully followed along (although I noticed that none of the 4 and 5 year olds in the audience bothered to -- slackers)

Recent Sketch

Continuing to refine the curriculum for the Background and Layout course.
I hope to get the students to develop their ability to draw a space from any point of view. To that end I'm trying out a little exercise I came across in "Creative Illustration" by Andrew Loomis. I know I'm a little late to the party in recommending that book but if you don't yet have it -- get it!

Recent Sketch

This is possibly the most beautiful door I've ever seen.
I've noticed that doors show up pretty frequently in my sketchbook. I'm sure there's some deep seated psychological reason for this -- security, portals of entry, potential mystery -- but since I tend to draw them in the fall I'm pretty sure it all comes back to trick-er-treating.

Playing with isometric perspective layouts.
Not something I typically use for my projects, but kinda cool.
On another note -- where did the last couple weeks go?! I've been working away on a series of YA novel covers (and interiors), and apparently have completely neglected this blog. I'll work to correct that.

Travel Sketches: Air and Space Museum
Headed out to the Air and Space Museum in McMinville this weekend. Never been before. If you're a fan of machines that hurtle people through the air at wildly inappropriate speeds you should definitely take time for a visit.
I'll be posting some pages over the next couple days.
